A window that has fogged, misted or cracked, with two or three panes of glass in one unit.
Run the tape across the visible glass, from where it disappears into the frame on one side to where it disappears on the other. The frame's outside dimension is a different number and it is the wrong one. Do the same top to bottom.
On intact, safely accessible glass, measure the visible width at the top, middle and bottom, then the height at the left, middle and right. Enter the smallest readings as approximate notes only. We confirm concealed edges, clearances and final sizes on site.
On intact glass, a phone light held at an angle can help estimate the pane count: two reflections often indicate one pane, four indicate two and six indicate three. Coatings can make this harder to read. Do not use a flame or touch damaged glass; leave this blank if you are unsure.
Tell us whether decorative bars appear to sit between the panes or on the surface. A photograph can help us discuss matching options. Do not touch the glass or remove anything to check; leave this detail blank if unsure.
Many units carry an etched or printed mark in one corner with the manufacturer and sometimes the date and the glass specification. Photograph it if you find one. It answers questions a tape measure cannot.
One thickness of glass, older wood or aluminium windows, garage and shed windows, interior panels.
Width at top, middle and bottom; height at left, middle and right. Keep the smallest of each. Measure to the nearest eighth of an inch or the nearest two millimetres.
A mark in a corner may identify the manufacturer, glass type or standard. Photograph it if safely visible. A mark alone does not mean the pane is tempered; we check the glass specification and the requirements for its location on site.
Wooden beading pinned around the edge, a rubber gasket, a metal bead that clips out, or putty. Tell us which and we bring the right materials rather than improvising on site.

Across and down, three readings each way, smallest wins. For a decorative insert, measure the outside of the frame that surrounds the decorative panel as well, because that frame is usually part of the unit.
Open the door and measure the edge. Most are around 45mm or an inch and three quarters, but it varies, and an insert has to match the door it sits in.
Plain, obscure or patterned glass is a straightforward replacement. Leaded or caming decorative panels are made to order and are worth photographing carefully from both sides.
A sliding or fixed panel in a patio door, usually one very large pane.
Standing inside and looking out: is the broken panel the one that slides or the one that is fixed, and is it on the left or the right. The two are different jobs.
These panes are big, so get a second pair of hands rather than a bent tape. Three readings each way, smallest wins.
Tell us whether it still slides and locks, or has dropped in its track. Glass damage and roller problems need separate checks. Do not move a panel with broken glass to test it.

Width and height of the pane, plus how far the bottom edge sits above the pavement or floor. That last number decides access and whether the panel can be handled from ground level.
