“Great service which fixed my malfunctioning sliding patio door lock. They were able to reduce their original quoted price which made the service more reasonable. The tech was courteous and knowledgeable, but had to return on a separate day due to an incompatible lock mechanism. He visited the very next morning and completed the repair quickly. Thanks for all your help! Highly recommend- 5 stars!”

Describe the closing problem, not just the device

Door closer repair starts with the way the entrance behaves. A door may slam, stop short, close unevenly, require an excessive push or fail to engage its latch. Those symptoms can involve the closer, but they can also involve hinges, pivots, alignment, seals or the latch and strike. We assess the operating opening before deciding what adjustment or replacement is appropriate. A closer is part of a working door system, and turning a setting does not identify every cause of a closing fault.

Door N Window assesses door closers and related commercial entrance hardware across the GTA. We are insured, WSIB Covered and available 24/7, with same-day service available. Tell us the address, door type and whether the entrance can still be used and secured safely. If movement is unpredictable or the door is a required exit, keep people clear of the fault and establish suitable access with the responsible property contact. An enquiry or form submission does not confirm dispatch.

For an explanation of the device and its different controls, read what a door closer does before preparing your enquiry.

Identify the existing closer and installation

The closer model and mounting arrangement guide the assessment. A surface-mounted body and arm are different from a concealed arrangement within the opening. Components that look similar may have different preparations, applications and supported adjustments. A visible label or safe photograph can help prepare for the visit, but do not remove covers or detach the arm to obtain one. Show the whole door and frame as well as the closing device when practical.

Tell us whether the opening is a single leaf, paired doors, a glazed entrance or another construction. Describe any recent changes to hardware, flooring, seals or door alignment. The relationship between the closer, leaf and frame matters to the operating fault. The technician checks the actual assembly instead of selecting a part solely because it resembles the old one. Existing fixing points and available support also influence whether adjustment, local repair or replacement is appropriate.

Check that the door can move through its path

A closer cannot resolve every source of mechanical resistance. A leaf rubbing on the threshold, a damaged hinge or a latch catching its strike can stop normal closing. The assessment examines movement and support before changing the closing device. Increasing force to overcome binding can leave the underlying fault in place and make the entrance harder to use. The repair plan should identify whether work is required on the closer, the opening or both.

Tell us if staff lift the door to lock it or if the same rubbing returns after adjustments. Repeated movement can point to worn support or damaged attachments that need attention. Commercial door repair covers that broader leaf and frame scope. We do not treat every door that stops short as a closer replacement, nor promise that replacing the closer will correct an unresolved alignment problem. The actual condition determines the proposal.

Slamming, uneven movement and visible leakage

A slamming door may have a closer fault or damaged installation, and oil leakage needs assessment rather than repeated trial adjustment. Allegion's technical note on slamming closers identifies loss of oil as one possible cause. That is a diagnostic possibility, not a conclusion about an unseen entrance. The inspection considers the device, attachments and the door's movement before recommending what should be repaired or replaced.

Keep people clear of a leaf that moves unpredictably or an arm that appears loose. Do not open the closer body, loosen adjustment valves or detach components yourself. Existing damage and the model's instructions affect what can be done. The technician distinguishes an adjustment suited to a serviceable device from a failed component or support that needs another solution. A new setting is not evidence that the closer is sound if leakage, damaged parts or loose mounting remain.

Closing movement and latch engagement are connected

The door should not merely move toward its frame; its intended latching also needs consideration. A leaf can reach the frame but fail to engage because of the latch, strike, alignment or resistance from another component. The technician examines that sequence before changing the closer. When a device supports separate movement settings, those settings belong to the actual model and installation. This page does not provide adjustment values for an unknown door.

Tell us whether the latch misses the strike consistently or only under particular conditions. An exterior entrance exposed to wind and a door within a pressured vestibule can behave differently. Those observations help assess the opening without establishing a universal setting. After the agreed work, closing and the relevant latch engagement are considered together. A door that shuts once does not prove the original intermittent fault has been identified or that every operating condition is resolved.

If resistance appeared after seals were added, our commercial door acoustic seal repair service assesses seal contact and closing together before more force is applied to the closer.

Arms, brackets and mounting support

The body, arm, brackets and attachments need to suit the door and mounting arrangement. Loose or damaged support can change the closer's geometry and movement. The technician checks the fixing points rather than assuming tightening a visible screw resolves the whole problem. If the door or frame has damaged preparation, that condition belongs in the agreed scope. An attachment must have appropriate support for the installation, not simply a surface where another hole can be made.

Replacement compatibility involves more than the body shape. The application, arm arrangement, preparation and opening construction need consideration. We discuss what can be retained and what components the repair requires. Parts identification and availability can affect what is completed during the visit. If a return appointment, frame repair or wider hardware task is needed, we make that next stage clear instead of describing a temporary attachment or incomplete assembly as a finished closer repair.

Consider people using the entrance

Closing behaviour affects people moving through the opening, including those who find a heavy door difficult to operate. A repair should account for the intended entrance and its project requirements rather than making the closer stronger until the leaf eventually shuts. The door's movement, latching and approach need consideration together. The property's responsible contact should explain any known access requirements or existing specification so the proposed work can be assessed in context.

An entrance with a power operator introduces another operating system to coordinate. Its movement and locking sequence may interact with the door and closing hardware. If the problem concerns the powered system, automatic door operator repair is a related scope. Do not disable the operator or other devices as a trial fix. We identify which parts of the work are mechanical and where another provider or additional system assessment may be required.

Fire doors and paired openings need their own assessment

Tell us if the door is identified as a fire door or required exit before work is agreed. Its labels, construction, existing hardware and intended closing and latching need consideration. A generic closer selected by appearance is not automatically suitable. The repair proposal must account for the actual opening and applicable requirements. We do not describe one closer adjustment as a building-wide fire-door or compliance assessment.

Paired doors can also have a coordinator, astragal or other hardware affecting their closing order and latch engagement. A fault on one leaf can influence the other. The inspection considers the complete arrangement rather than replacing only the nearest visible device. Door closers and push bars explains the broader hardware scope. The agreed work and handover should distinguish the closer task from any coordinator, exit mechanism or locking repair required.

Repair, adjustment or replacement

Adjustment may be appropriate where the device, support and door remain suitable and the model permits it. Leakage, damaged mechanisms, unsuitable mounting or unavailable compatible parts can lead to another repair or replacement proposal. We discuss the findings after assessment and confirm the scope before paid work begins. We do not promise that every closer can be adjusted back into reliable operation or that every replacement will fit the original preparation without additional work.

The proposal should identify the closer and any supporting hardware work, along with parts or provider coordination still needed. Tell us about business hours and access arrangements so the visit can be planned around the actual property. Scheduling depends on the fault, safe access and agreed scope. A required exit or unsafe moving leaf needs a practical access plan while the repair is arranged; it should not be propped, obstructed or otherwise adapted by staff to hide the fault.

Operating checks and a clear handover

After the agreed repair, the affected movement, attachments and latch interaction need checks appropriate to the opening. If the work includes paired leaves or coordination with an operator, the relevant sequence should be considered. Staff should understand what was addressed, any instructions supplied for the equipment and what remains unresolved. A completed adjustment and an outstanding part order are different states, and the work record should make that distinction clear.

Report recurring slamming, new leakage, loose attachments or a return of the original symptom. Do not compensate with repeated valve adjustments or improvised supports. Keep the agreed scope and equipment information available for follow-up questions. We can help describe damage-related work in insurance paperwork where relevant, but coverage and reimbursement belong to the insurer and policy. The objective is a repair suited to this door, followed by understandable operating and maintenance guidance.

Colin Tooke's saved review excerpt specifically mentions a broken door closer. Its missing ending is not available in the source and has not been reconstructed. Snappers Fish Market's separate account describes a commercial door replacement with existing brass handles transferred. That is related entrance work rather than another closer repair case. Original names, wording and individual ratings are retained below without using the accounts to promise another door's repair method or timing.

For your entrance, describe the movement, latch problem and visible device condition when calling. The assessment of the closer and complete opening establishes the suitable next step. That information is more useful than guessing a model, copying an adjustment from another door or assuming that one replacement component resolves the whole fault.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

If yours is not here, call and ask. We would rather answer it now than have you guess.

Is a slamming door always caused by the closer?

The closer can be involved, but mounting damage, support, door movement and other opening conditions also need assessment. Oil leakage is a relevant observation, not a remote diagnosis. We examine the actual device and door before recommending an adjustment, compatible parts or replacement.

Can you adjust a closer instead of replacing it?

Adjustment may be suitable where the closer, support and opening remain serviceable and the model allows it. A failed mechanism, leakage or unsuitable installation may require a different scope. We do not promise that every device can be restored by changing its settings.

Should I loosen the valves to slow the door down?

Do not open the body or make repeated trial adjustments to an unknown closer. Model instructions and the actual installation matter, and loose attachments or leakage need assessment. Keep people clear of unpredictable movement and arrange service rather than adapting the device to conceal the fault.

Why does the door reach the frame but fail to latch?

Alignment, the latch and strike, seals or other resistance may stop engagement. The assessment considers closing and latching together. Increasing force or replacing the closer alone does not necessarily correct a mechanical fault elsewhere in the opening. Describe when the failure occurs and any related rubbing.

Does the replacement need to match the old closer's shape?

Appearance is only one part of identification. The application, door construction, preparation, arm arrangement and support need consideration. Compatible equipment must suit the actual installation. We discuss any mounting or hardware changes required rather than assuming that a similar-looking body is interchangeable.

Can you assess a closer on a fire door?

Tell us that the opening is identified as a fire door or required exit. Its labels, construction and hardware requirements need consideration before adjustment or replacement is agreed. We do not describe a closer repair as a building-wide fire-door or compliance assessment.

What if the door also has an automatic operator?

The operator, mechanical opening and closing hardware may need coordinated assessment. Identify the system and describe when the fault occurs. Do not disable devices as a test. The scope should distinguish the closer task from powered-system work and any required coordination with another provider.

Do both leaves of paired doors need checking?

The complete arrangement should be considered when closing order or latching is affected. A coordinator, astragal, locking component or fault on one leaf can influence the other. The proposal should identify those relationships rather than assuming only the nearest visible closer needs work.

Are same-day or overnight visits available?

Our line is available 24/7 and same-day service is available. Call with the entrance details and current condition to discuss the next step. Assessment, safe access and compatible parts influence the repair. An enquiry does not promise a fixed arrival or completion time.

What should staff know after the repair?

The handover explains the work completed, relevant operating checks, supplied equipment guidance and any remaining parts or coordination. Report renewed slamming, leakage or loose mounting. Do not repeatedly change settings to compensate. The record should distinguish a completed repair from a temporary arrangement or unfinished stage.
